Chapters 57 - 64
The Micawber family and Mr. Peggotty and Emily leave for Australia. David decides not to tell them about the deaths of Ham and Steerforth. When he goes to see their ship off, he notices that Martha is also going with them to Australia. In his turn, David goes abroad and one day he receives a letter from Agnes which makes him understand that he truly loves her. But, however, he also feels that he has missed the chance with her by marrying Dora and assumes that now they can only be friends. Finally, having spent three years abroad, David returns to England.
David goes to Dover, where he stays with his aunt, Mr. Dick, and Peggotty. Betsey reports that Mr. Micawber is happy in Australia and has begun to pay off his debt to her. After that David goes to Canterbury to see Agnes. Agnes now runs a girls' school to support her father. David is sure of his love for her but thinks that they can never be more than friends, so he feels that he must sacrifice his love in order to preserve their friendship.
Subsequently, David becomes a famous author and has a great deal of fan mail to read. One day he receives a letter from Mr. Creakle, his old schoolmaster at Salem House. Mr. Creakle now runs an experimental prison and asks David to come and visit the prison. The two most penitent prisoners are Uriah Heep and Littimer. However, David is not fooled by their regret for their crimes.
David continues to see Agnes whenever he can and one day she admits her love for him. In his turn, David confesses his love for her. The next day, they announce their love to their relatives and quickly get married. After the wedding, Agnes reveals that Dora, on her deathbed, asked Agnes to marry David. Ten years later, after Agnes and David have had several children; Mr. Peggotty suddenly arrives one night. He tells them about what has happened in Australia. Emily learned about Ham's death from a newspaper. She has never married and is determined to take care of her uncle. The Micawbers have prospered in Australia and repaid all their debts. Mr. Micawber has been elected to local government office in Australia and regularly contributes to the newspapers there. After the visit, they go to Yarmouth to see Ham's grave. After that Mr. Peggotty returns to Australia.
David reflects on his life at the time when he finished writing his story. Everyone is happy and prospering, especially David and Agnes and Traddles and his wife Sophie. The only disappointment is Mrs. Steerforth's situation; she has gone mad with the grief over the death of her son. David ends his story, praying that his dear Agnes may be with him all his life.
